The Nov. 19 edition of Forbes magazine designated the United Way as one of five All-Star charities.

Two criteria were used in making the determination — size and financial efficiency. The goal was to recognize the top 100 charities, and the cut-off for donations was $121 million.

In addition, the magazine considered the efficiency of the donation process by asking each charity how much it took to raise $1 in support. The United Way, which depends on donations from individual and corporate donors, had a fund raising efficiency of 91 percent — spending just nine cents to raise one dollar! With just 1 percent going to support the national organization, this means that 90 percent of your contribution to the United Way supports health, education, and income initiatives in our community.
